Give us

Give us today our daily bread

I think that Jesus is talking about bread.

I know many have spiritualised this prayer, and that is legitimate. Jesus said that we couldn't live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God. Reading daily scriptures is an excellent habit. It's fine to call this Daily Bread.

But I think that Jesus was talking about actual bread.

In an affluent nation, we don't expect to have to ask our Father to provide us with food. If there's plenty to go round, we just expect to have enough. However even in wealthy countries that is no longer the case for everyone.

As the world turns and the effects of COVID 19 hit harder and we fall into a worldwide, economic recession, this will become more of a problem. Families in Britain are increasingly reliant on food banks, and in America on other charities.

The world has enough for everyone's need, but not enough for everyone's greed
Gandhi

I really think that Jesus was talking about bread.

Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone?
Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake?
If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!
Matthew 7 v 9 – 11

Fathers love to give their children gifts. How much more will Our Heavenly Father give us what we need. We may never get that Mercedes Bens of the song, but we will never go hungry if we trust in Him to provide.

When the Israelites were travelling in the wilderness they collected manna to eat every day. There was always enough, but if they collected it for the next day, it went off. We can trust God to provide for our needs every day.

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you as well.
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.
Each day has enough trouble of its own.
Matthew 6 v 33 – 34

Maybe we don’t have because we haven’t asked.

You do not have because you do not ask God.
When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.
James 4 v 2b - 3

Our Father in Russian

If you are a regular reader of my blogs, you will know that I don't ask for donations. But because we are talking about food, we cannot ignore that there are an increasing number of people in the world going hungry. Because of this I'm including links to 3 charities that I have researched and can recommend.

Firstly, a local UK foodbank in NE England where my friend works:

Secondly, an International Charity which pioneered sustainable aid, with the idea of a gift of a goat and other farm animals, to give families an income:

Finally, an organisation that I volunteer with, helping refugee women that I know personally, gain money by sewing and embroidery:
